This chordal system has been used by a small group of cellists who were studying with one of the greatest cello teachers, Simeon Kosolupov. He had the ability to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary, by adding a few very specific exercises to ordinary exercises, that skyrocketed his students´ performance. His students, who became the top cellists of the late twentieth century, were famous for their impeccable intonation and unprecedented level of technical ease and virtuosity. Among these students, was the great cellist, Mstislav Rostropovich. However, this method was never published and only passed on aurally to the few cellists who were fortunate enough to learn this method. I was one of the lucky ones…
When I was in my teens, I soon realized that, if I wanted to perform the wonderful cello repertoire optimally, my technique needs to be impeccable. I was willing to put in every effort to find a cello teacher who could help me develop a technique that will allow me to perform everything with ease and accuracy. After investigating several possibilities, I was very lucky to find that cello professor – Alexander Fedortchenko – a former student of Kosolupov and fellow classmate of Rostropovich. He taught me this secret chordal method, using arpeggios and seventh chords with extended inversions, to take your technique to the highest level in a short time. I soon recognized how my general technique, accuracy in shifting and intonation improved and how I could play the most demanding repertoire, with more ease.
Two decades later, I started teaching this chordal method to my advanced students. Since it was never published, I wrote parts of it down on pieces of paper.
However, I realized that I have a responsibility towards current and future generations of cellists, not to keep this cello treasure, a secret. I therefore decided to publish the entire chordal method.
It is now published in its entirety for the first time! To help you benefit most from it, I include parts with additional fingerings and notes on how to play the chords with additional bowings. As a bonus, I also add parts without fingerings, where you can add your own fingerings, bowings and rhythms – to take your ordinary and make it extraordinary!
The Cello chordal compass is for advanced cello students, teachers and professional performers, who are serious about taking their performance to their highest possible level. Although this chordal method is very comprehensive, you can break it down into small chunks or expand it to suit your personal needs and level of performance.
I recognize the benefits on a daily basis, not only for my students and coaching of cello teachers, but also for myself as a professional cellist, where I need to stay in shape in my strive to reach performance excellence. Therefore it can be a companion on your cello journey, whatever your level of accomplishment!
